Assistant Teacher
Chloe Day School & Wellness Center

General Description
The Co-Teacher supports the Head Teacher in implementing the preschool instructional program and fostering a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment. This role involves supervising children throughout the day, including in the classroom, on the playground, at meals and snacks, during transitions, at arrival and dismissal, and on field trips. The Assistant Teacher works closely with the Head Teacher to ensure the growth, development, and well-being of each child.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise preschool children throughout the day, ensuring safety in all settings (classroom, playground, meals, transitions, arrival/dismissal, and trips).

  • Ensure students are always accompanied and directly supervised by an adult while moving about the school or on trips.

  • Remain actively engaged and alert to students’ individual learning styles and needs.

  • Provide classroom coverage as directed by the Director.

  • Assist the Head Teacher in preparing, implementing, and recording daily lessons.

  • Collaborate with the Head Teacher in developing age-appropriate goals for children.

  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment.

  • Support the Head Teacher in monitoring students for signs of emotional difficulties, abuse, or neglect and report concerns promptly.

  • Actively participate in student progress meetings and address children’s needs.

  • Build and maintain positive, supportive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.

  • Share personal talents and skills to enhance the preschool program.

  • Participate in professional development, including required in-service training.

  • Assist with clerical and administrative tasks such as collecting student work, preparing progress reports, contacting parents, and writing incident reports.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Education or Site Directors.

  • Represent Chloe Day School’s mission, values, and Code of Conduct at all times.

Minimum Education and Credentials

  • Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred

  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential required within one year of hire

Experience

  • Previous experience working with preschool children, preferably in a school or childcare setting

Head Teacher Job Description

Chloe Day School & Wellness Center

General Description

The Head Teacher is responsible for supporting the academic, instructional, remedial, behavioral, and developmental needs of all children in their assigned age-level classroom at Chloe Day School & Wellness Center. This role requires strong classroom management, the ability to foster a positive preschool learning environment, and effective supervision of Assistant Teachers and Volunteers.

The Head Teacher must also maintain compliance with all reporting requirements mandated by governmental agencies and work collaboratively with staff, parents, guardians, outside agencies, and funders to ensure the best outcomes for children.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represent Chloe Day School & Wellness Center’s mission, values, ethics, and uphold the agency’s Code of Conduct.

  • Plan and lead classroom activities and instruction that support children’s developmental goals.

  • Develop engaging curricula and enrichment activities that encourage student participation.

  • Supervise and collaborate with Assistant Teachers to ensure classroom success.

  • Follow classroom schedules as developed with the Educational Director.

  • Prepare daily lesson plans for all instructional periods.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student progress records throughout the school year.

  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment (including cleaning tables, toys, and instructional materials).

  • Implement safety protocols to protect children and staff.

  • Engage parents and guardians in enrichment activities, including occasional events outside regular center hours.

  • Provide input and recommendations to the Preschool Director for program enhancement.

  • Support additional duties as assigned by the Site Director (including assisting with food service if necessary).

  • Participate in monthly team meetings and annual agency self-assessment protocols.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in Education, Birth–2 (preferred)

  • NYS Teacher Certification (required; candidates may be on a study plan)

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with progress toward NYS certification

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an early childhood setting

  • Familiarity with NYC DOE, Head Start, and DOH regulations and training requirements

  • Experience engaging and collaborating with parents

  • Basic computer literacy

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to provide high-quality instruction for preschool-aged children

  • Effective classroom and behavior management strategies

  • Strong communication skills with administrators, colleagues, families, and service staff

  • Ability to write clear and targeted student progress reports

  • Flexibility to adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs

  • Commitment to partnering with families and community members to support child development
